In 1986, Delores and Lauren Dunn started an informal plant exchange in the community. This successful idea was enhanced when Sandy Henshall suggested forming a horticultural society. As a society and a member of the Ontario Horticultural Society, they were able to claim a start up grant from the Ontario Government. With the assistance of Bonnie Robinson and Cathy Hall, The Society organized on May 20^th 1987. Bonnie Robinson was the first President. The first year of activities concluded with a membership of 53 keen gardeners.

Promoting the planting of trees, shrubs and flowers on public and private properties.

Education of members through speakers , Field trips and other events.

In 1988 the Society received a Provincial award for the greatest membership growth. In 1989,the first perennials were planted in the Centennial Garden At the McMurrich Township Office on Highway #518. Since then the Society maintains gardens at McMurrich Community Centre, Perry Township Public Library and Almaguin Highlands Information Centre and Kearney Township Office.

The Society has been involved in the events of the Township as hosts to Flower Shows, Bake Sales and Plant Sales. They have entered floats in the Sprucedale Parades…handing out seeds.

In 1991,with the memberships approval of their constitution and bylaws, they currently have five executive and ten committee board Members. A Newsletter is published annually.

Other Presidents over the past years include Dolores Dunn, Janice Madill, Lynda Cipolla, Merv Mulligan, Michael Phipps, Harvey Rickward, and Les Knott. This year, 2002, Bonnie Robinson is our President.
